Organizing with Categories

Product categories help customers navigate your store and find what they're looking for quickly.

Creating Categories

Adding a New Category

  1. Go to Products > Categories
  2. Click "Add Category"
  3. Enter category details:
    • Name: Clear, descriptive category name
    • Slug: URL-friendly version (auto-generated)
    • Description: Brief explanation of category contents
    • Image: Optional category banner image

Parent and Child Categories

Create hierarchical organization:

  • Parent Categories: Top-level categories (e.g., "Clothing")
  • Child Categories: Subcategories (e.g., "T-Shirts", "Jeans")
  • Select parent when creating child category
  • Up to 3 levels of hierarchy supported

Managing Categories

Editing Categories

Modify existing categories:

  • Update name and description
  • Change category image
  • Reorder categories by dragging
  • Reassign parent category

Category Display Settings

Control how categories appear:

  • Set display order
  • Choose grid or list view
  • Enable/disable category images
  • Show product count

Assigning Products

During Product Creation

  • Select categories when creating product
  • Assign to multiple categories if needed

Bulk Assignment

  • Select multiple products
  • Choose "Assign Category" from bulk actions
  • Select target category

Category Pages

Each category gets its own page:

  • Automatically generated URL
  • Shows all products in category
  • Includes child category products (optional)
  • Supports filtering and sorting

Best Practices

Naming Conventions

  • Use clear, customer-friendly names
  • Keep names concise (2-3 words)
  • Avoid technical jargon
  • Be consistent across categories

Category Structure

  • Don't create too many categories
  • Aim for 5-10 top-level categories
  • Use subcategories for detailed organization
  • Consider customer browsing behavior

Category Images

  • Use consistent image style
  • Recommended size: 1200x400 pixels
  • Ensure images are relevant to category
  • Compress images for faster loading

  • Write unique descriptions for each category
